Colours in Contact Progression Framework

This progression framework offers a shared language for how we grow in contact improvisation at Colours in Contact. Rather than a hierarchy of “levels,” it reflects different ways of meeting the practice over time - how skills, awareness, creativity, and relational depth naturally unfold. We created it to support clarity, self-reflection, and accessibility, so dancers can locate themselves with kindness and curiosity, and choose classes and experiences that feel aligned with where they are at any given time. It’s a map, not a destination, one that honours many pathways into embodied, relational dance.

Each phase in the framework carries its own discoveries and its own growing edges. New ways of moving, sensing, and relating often emerge that weren’t accessible before, alongside challenges that are very much part of the process. Naming these phases helps normalize what can otherwise feel personal or isolating: moments like feeling overwhelmed by touch in the connector phase, or finding yourself “in your head” as a learner once the concepts start to multiply. Knowing this can be deeply reassuring. It reminds us that we’re not alone in what we’re working through, that others have been here too, and that the practice - and the community - is designed to hold us as we move through it. Over time, this doesn’t just shape how we dance; it gently re-teaches us how to learn, how to meet challenge with curiosity, and how to lean on collective support in life beyond the studio.

Have a look below to explore each phase.

Dancers are new to contact improv and focus on building comfort with physical connection, safety, and simple weight sharing. They begin to explore fundamental concepts like momentum, balance, and moving together with awareness, curiosity, and care. Connectors are developing trust in themselves and in their dance partners, laying the groundwork for deeper exploration.

Dancers develop fluidity, playfulness, and growing confidence with off-axis movements, falls, rolls, and medium lifts. They explore new movement pathways more freely and begin improvising beyond foundational patterns, though moments of hesitation or overthinking may still occur as they deepen their practice. Comfort and creativity continue to expand.

Dancers demonstrate deep mastery of contact improv, moving with skill, presence, and natural creativity. They inspire growth by holding supportive space, exploring new edges, and guiding others to discover and trust their own unique way in the dance. Their movement reflects confidence and a rich understanding of connection.

Dancers are integrating the basics of contact improv with growing body awareness and curiosity. They begin experimenting with small lifts and new movement pathways, though moments of uncertainty and overthinking can still arise. Comfort and confidence are building as they tinker with creative possibilities and develop trust in their own choices.

Dancers move beyond technique and performance, integrating deep attunement to themselves, their partners, and the space around them. They develop greater presence, fluidity, and responsiveness, and may begin stepping into teacher-in-training roles, guiding others while continuing to deepen their own exploration and connection.

Dancers embody a profound sense of presence and groundedness in their practice. Their movements are deeply integrated, responsive, and intuitive. They hold space with care, nurture others, and transmit the embodied wisdom of contact improv through their very way of being. Their presence fosters connection, inspiring growth and deepening the collective experience of the dance.

We’re always happy to talk more about this framework and how it relates to your individual experience. If you’re unsure where you might land, curious about what you’re moving through, or simply want to reflect together, we’re here for that conversation. This framework is meant to be lived, questioned, and adapted, and we see it as something that grows through dialogue, relationship, and shared practice as much as through time on the dance floor.
